Change of roles
Each person comes to this world with a specific purpose, each has his own specific place. The main task of the individual is implementation in a society. But in this article we will not talk about a separate unit of society, not about the formation of personality, but about a specific gender group – about men. Namely, what is men’s destiny, what distinguishes the role of men in primitive society from the current situation in the modern world, how to realize the stronger sex, and what constitutes a model of modern men.
Anyone who would like to know the difference between a man and a woman should not think and reflect on whether he is a typical man or a typical woman, rather, you need to allow yourself to lead a full life. Only the one who does not torment himself with the question: “Do I play my part correctly and have I succeeded?” – it is he who knows the deep productivity of the differences between the sexes inherent in each individual person. © Erich Fromm
At all times, men’s destiny implied two basic concepts: to be a getter and provide for a family, and also to fulfill the function of a defender. But at the end of the century before last, when the weak half of humanity launched an active campaign to promote feminism, there was a change in gender roles. Women, in the struggle for equality, have ensured that the representatives of the fair sex can now be miners and defenders. In this regard, men got the opportunity to relieve part of the responsibility. Or try on the opposite gender role, taking responsibility for creating home comfort and raising children – which from time immemorial purely women have been doing.
A hundred years ago, such a position would cause bewilderment on the part of the public, because housekeeping does not fit into the concepts of male destiny. At present, it is extremely difficult to surprise a society with such a family model.
The evolution of the role of men in society
The role of men in the family and society is significantly reformed and is far from the model of past centuries. In the prehistoric period, men primarily appreciated physical development, since in addition to being a good hunter and defender of their territory, in fact, nothing more was required. But with the development of mankind, the essence of male destiny also changes. Further to the “man – hunter” model, the additions “warrior” and “conqueror”, “strategist” and “scientist” are introduced. Earlier, at all times of the evolution of gender, a man stood a notch above a woman. It was the strong sex that held leadership positions and resolved issues of national importance.
The men’s destiny was to conquer the fields of science and culture, politics and sports, education and medicine, which were mainly entirely given to strong men’s hands, while women had to be content with the three K rule, as they say in Germany, namely: Kinder, Kuche, Kirche. Which means “children, kitchen, church” (and the church used to belong entirely to men too).
The stronger sex developed and realized under the conditions of a prosperous patriarchy. But acquiring valuable skills and abilities in important sectors of the state, men lost the old time in another. The absence of concepts about households, everyday life, and other spheres of life reserved exclusively for women made the representatives of the stronger sex non-independent in elementary questions of the practical side of life. What is a striking difference from the men of the modern world, in which there is practically no room for gender divisions and stereotypes.
The image of a modern man
Over time, modern society has greatly abolished the strict criteria by which the image of a modern man is determined. With the advent of such a social phenomenon as feminism, the gender distribution of roles becomes less vivid. If women can do work that was previously considered purely masculine, then why can’t men begin to realize themselves in “female” spheres? It is no surprise to anyone that a man can independently manage his household or understand fashion, be able to cook wonderfully, or enjoy raising children.
Now, to be considered a “real man”, it is not at all necessary to serve in the army, as was believed in Soviet times, or to bring a murdered mammoth to a wife every day, as our ancestors did in even more ancient times.
So what is he, the image of a modern man? And what is now considered a truly masculine destiny
The first in the list of qualities of a real man, of course, should be the line “Do what you promised.” This is the hallmark of courage. According to it, people will judge you and measure the share of respect with which you should be treated. © Steve Harvey
